I believe that a large part of conservatives in this forum (and in the US in general) have never left the United States (I may be wrong). My theory is that the more a person has travelled and opened one's mind to new cultures in doing so, the more LIKELY that person is to be more 'liberal' and the logical reverse of this is that the less a person has travelled the more likely the person is to be 'conservative'.

I do realise that 'liberal' and 'conservatives' are subjective to time and place but for the sake of my hypothesis, let us assume the general definitions of both terms as seen in the US.

Therefore I ask the conservatives in this forum to honestly tell me how many countries they have travelled to (without including Canada).

KMAN, PATRIOT, AMERICAN, to name a few...i'm looking forward to it.

About 5 years ago I went to Singapore and Brazil and Mexico when I was real young.

If you count going on a cruise to the Caribbean, I did that too.

I would love to go to Europe but haven't been able to get it together yet.

A2345,
I think it's deeper than where people vacation. I grew up in a predominately white christian community, went to university at 98% white university and shared many of the same stereotypes as some of these conservative clowns ...

since then, I've lived in NY for 5 years and oddly enough the only white people that I socialize with happen to be jewish - the rest are asian, middle eastern, and (mostly) european. (just by chance and coincidence)

Predictably enough as my sterotypes melted before my eyes it also changed my political stance, increased my tollerence and created a desire to learn of other cultures.

I get annoyed when I hear the neo-cons justify their ignorance with "but I work with a arab". Big f'ing deal.

I have been to:

England
Ireland
Continental Europe (all over on a rail pass)
Japan
Mexico
Costa Rica
Belize
Guatamala
Jamaica
Hong Kong (Pre - '97 so it technically wasn't China yet.)
Australia (have relativers there)

I'm sure I have missed a few.

I have lived and worked in several of the places, not just visited and I have also lived in Montreal for a year.

As for your theory, it's crap.

And by the way, your question seems to indicate that you are a bigot in that you assume all conservatives are uncultured, uneducated rednecks who never leave their home town. Is this true?

Floyd,
The word used was "likely". I'm not sure if you misunderstood his position or simply do not understand basic logic, but the quantifiers "likely" (implicitly 'some') and "all" are in no manner synonymous with one another.

Lander - the words "likely" and "usually" and "typically" are often used by bigots, wouldn't you agree?

Well, I'm not sure Floyd, but I certainly hope not because the guy on the weather channel said that a snow storm was "likely".

Nice Lander, you get painted into a corner and you dodge the issue and make a feeble attempt at humor. Very nice.

And "likely" is more synonymous with "most" or "probably" than "some" as you say.

Floyd,
I didn't dodge the question. My sarcasm was an implicit answer that your belief that bigots often use the words "likely", "usally" and "typically" was an inane assertion.

"And by the way, your question seems to indicate that you are a bigot in that you assume all conservatives are uncultured"

Regardless, had you understood my post you'd have seen that the intent was to show the differnce between absolute and relative quantification - you incorrectly substituted a relative quantifier (likely) with an absolute quantifier (all).

While I do agree that "likely" more closely equates to "many" (most, as you said) than it dows to "some" you must understand that it was not incorrect as some and many both indicate a relative number (unspecified quantity), but certainly "many" would have been more precise as it suggests a majority, whereas "some" doesn't suggest anything other than (n>0 & n<x-1, where n equals the qualified quantity and x equals the possible quantity).

Just for your own understanding
"many" would be defined as (n>x/2 & n<x-1)
"all" would be defined as (n=x & x>0)
"none" would be defined as (n=0 & x>0)
"nil" (non-existant/empty set) would be defined as (x=0) (therefore n is impossible to objectively quantify)

Real numbers include zero (amongst other things such as fractions, and infinite upper and lower bounds).

Counting numbers begin at 1 and increase towards positive infinity by 1 with each subsequent number.

I've been to Canada where I know me and five other conservative Americans could take over that country on our own, because they are such pussy ass liberals up their who could fight anything bigger than a 8 pounds walleye. eh, dey gotta good beer dough.

Medico where I can drink more beer than five of da locals combined.

I think those countries absolutely stink compared to America as long as a republican is running the United States.

I'm not sure what leaving the country has to do with political views and I'm sure the people in Singapore and Sao Paulo love their countries but my trips to these countries made me very thankful that I live in the US.

Don't buy this theory at all. Think of all the poor minorities who never leave their city or state because they can't afford to spend $5,000 on a trip to Europe. They tend to vote for Liberals/Democrats, don't they?

I just don't think there is any correlation between world-travel and political views.

I'll respond since I have recently voiced approval for certain actions taken by American leadership though I don't consider myself conservative, liberal, or moderate. My views just happen to agree with a person who labels themselves as such.

Currently, I've been to these countries:

Canada
Mexico
Nicaragua
Colombia
Brazil
France

Saudi Arabia
Qatar
Turkey

With plans to go to Italy and Spain sometime this year.

Funk Monkey,

I think that the Americans that can afford to travel frequently are the ones that anger many of the local residents they encounter abroad. I know some accuse me of arrogance, but some of these travelers are a lot worse than I am.

My best example is a couple that I know. They are complete asses. The wife is, by far, the larger of the two. The husband just doesn't have any balls and follows her lead. She is all the time spouting all this feminist, equality garbage and I just want to smack her. I don't accompany them on their foreign exploits but if she goes off in some of the nations I listed in my previous post there might be problems.

I understand that when you travel you're not in Kansas anymore and there are different laws there and your "I'm an American, bow to me." approach is hypocritical at best. What is funny is that this same idiot is against the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan that symbolize a similar state of mind. That doesn't apply to her, though. Too funny.
